Rural Safety Strategy leads to 37 arrests over weekend

Different role-players were on high alert across the West Rand during the past weekend.

On Thursday, 2 August, the Rural Safety Strategy was implemented and all stakeholders were encouraged to work closely with the rural communities to fight acts of violence against them.

According to Henry Boyce, the CPF operations coordinator, the West Rand Cluster Police, Krugersdorp Police and CPF, Randfontein Police and CPF, Muldersdrift Police, Hekpoort Police, Magaliesburg Police, Carletonville Police and CPF, Fochville Police, Westonaria Police, Bekkersdal Police and CPF, EPR Security, Department of Home Affairs, Paramedics and Convert Security members were involved in the campaign.

They combined their efforts to address the ongoing violent crimes perpetrated against rural communities, as well as the high levels of crime and drug dealers in all local communities.

The anti-crime campaigns have been very successful in areas such as Randfontein and Westonaria and we are now focusing on Krugersdorp as well. The purpose of the campaigns is to steadily decrease crimes in CBDs, on farms and on smallholdings. All members strive to serve and protect,” Boyce said.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, the anti-crime campaign had numerous successful results.

“During the past weekend, 37 suspects were arrested, most all of them as a result of the campaign,” Ernst said.

“Among these arrests 15 were drug-related and five were for driving under the influence of liquor. Other arrests include for rape, theft, possession of stolen goods and assault,” Ernst added.

The Randfontein Police station commander, Brigadier Mashole Manamela applauded all those involved in achieving these successes. “Our members were out in full force again and the partnership policing initiative is an integral part of the process,” he said.

“We regard the safety and security of the rural community as a priority. Together we make a difference,” Boyce concluded.
