The Constitutional Review Committee will now set its sights on the West Rand for public hearings about a possible amendment of section 25 of the Constitution to allow expropriation without compensation.
The public hearing will be held from 10am at the Greenhills Sports Stadium in Randfontein on Thursday, 26 July. The public will have the opportunity to share its views on the motion.
A letter the Herald received on Tuesday morning read, “As part of the public participation process, the Committee will conduct public hearings to get the views of ordinary South Africans about the necessity of, and mechanisms for expropriating land without compensation.
“Mogale City is expected to mobilise 166 stakeholders to attend and take part in the public hearing.
The Municipal Governance office requests Ward Councillors to assist in identifying stakeholders who will be interested in participating at the hearing. The proposed target groups are land/ property owners, Community Property Associations, farm owners and youth and children formations.”
