Residents had to drive through sewage on Van Riebeeck Road, Homelake on the morning of Thursday, 5 July, but the problem was fixed the very same afternoon.

According to Craig Harrison, DA councillor for Ward 7, the fixing of one sewage problem led to another.

The drain blockage on the corner of Brian Road and Freda Avenue caused frequent problems. It was opened up on Thursday morning to fix the problem, but the sewage then started coming out of three other manholes, flooding both Elaine Avenue and Van Riebeeck Road.

“The situation was unhygienic. The sewage poses a health risk to school learners and other pedestrians who use these streets,” Harrison said.

“We wanted to fix it and clean it up as soon as possible.”

Harrison reported the new problem, which was resolved on Thursday afternoon.

“The DA has submitted a petition on the upgrade of our sewage plant and network. The petition was sent to the local council, District Council and the Gauteng provincial government,” Harrison added.
