Land issue: Time running out for public to say its say

People are advised to use the online tool, OpenUp, to weigh in on the matter of land in South Africa.

The public is only left with only 12 days to raise their voice about land expropriation without compensation by using the online tool, OpenUp.

This comes after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) proposed that the National Assembly Constitutional Review Committee investigate mechanisms through which land can be expropriated without compensation, and the motion was adopted by Parliament.

“The parliamentary committee that will review section 25 of the Constitution, which deals with property rights, has invited the public to participate in the debate, through a series of hearings and by engaging with the committee,” said the Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG).

In an interview with the PMG, the chairperson of the committee, Vincent Smith said: “People must feel free to come and give their views and be tolerant enough to allow those who have different views, to air their views.”

It said using the tool, users will be taken through a series of questions which will take no more than five minutes to answer.

“Once the questionnaire has been completed, it is then submitted to the committee via an email, PMG said.

“We have also included a question asking people who respond whether they agree to the media contacting them to interview them about their submission.

“We will compile a spreadsheet with the names and contact details of those who agree and share it with you, so you can follow up and do interviews. If necessary, we can also help isolate people from the area in which you publish or broadcast who responded,” PMG added
