No dumping means no dumping!

Angela Lombard says people continue to dump rubbish illegally despite the large sign prohibiting it.

At least 10 times a week, service delivery issues are reported to the municipality. But for years, nothing has been done, said Kocksoord resident Angela Lombard.

She told the Herald how fed up the community is and that they demand that the municipality helps to resolve their issues. Among the many issues in the area are facilities such as the play park that are in disrepair. “Equipment in the park had been stolen and there no place for our children to play,” she said.

Lombard said members of the community have reached a point where they believe the municipality does not care about them. “People have given up because if the municipality does not do its job, things will come to a standstill”, she lamented.

Lombard added that the illegal dumping site is a huge health hazard to those living nearby. “There is huge sign that says ‘No Dumping’, but it seems people cannot read. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of municipal services delivery. If the garbage truck does not remove the people’s rubbish, what do they do? They dump their refuse in the veld.

“The problem is the municipality only empties bins. People who do not have bins put their rubbish outside in black bags. When the municipality does not collect it, they dump it in the veld,” she said.

“I have been living here for 30 years. I grew up in this neighbourhood and we know all the families here. We used to play hide-and-seek, tennis, rugby and netball in the veld. It makes me sad that the children in the area will never get to enjoy living in Kocksoord the way we did.

“The open areas have become dumping sites and children cannot play there or even outside anymore. Broken glass and other dangerous objects litter the area. It’s time for the municipality to do what it is supposed to,” Lombard concluded.
