Tennis courts in Finsbury unsafe for the community

Bokkie Pule is concerned about the waste being dumped near the tennis courts, and said the place is not safe for children in the area to play in.

The tennis courts in Finsbury that were meant to facilitate the development of sport, have become an eyesore.

Residents said the facilities are no longer family-friendly and pointed out the unkempt condition of the area.

They believe the facilities were wasteful expenditure as they are not being utilised, and their location is inconvenient and unsafe to many.

The Herald visited the facilities and found them littered with rubbish. The vegetation around the area is overgrown and it is an unpleasant sight.

“The community is very concerned about the safety of children as they could be raped or even killed right here,” Bokkie Pule said.

“If a small child is injured or gets in some of kind of trouble here, how would you as parent know about it? Our kids’ safety is not guaranteed here,” Pule said.

Another resident, Betty Nkomo, said, “This was not planned properly and shows that money was wasted for someone to benefit from the project.

“We have heard that money was allocated for the maintenance of these facilities, but clearly it was either not the case or it was not used for that purpose. These facilities are not benefiting anyone in the community; nobody enjoys using them.”

“Look at this place now. It has been abandoned and isn’t in a good shape. What a waste!” Pule added.
