The 46-year-old man who was allegedly shot in the head by an eight-year-old child on Tuesday, 3 April, has died in hospital.

Brigadier Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander, confirmed that the man passed away in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Tuesday, 10 April.

“Because the victim has passed away, the charge of attempted murder now changes to murder. An inquest will be conducted, and a post-mortem will be done to establish the exact cause of death.”

In their original statement on the day of the incident on Tuesday, 3 April, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said they had received an emergency call at 7.10am and immediately responded.

“Upon arrival, paramedics were led into a bedroom in the home. An elderly man was found lying in his bed. Paramedics assessed him and found that he had sustained a gunshot wound to his head, leaving him in a critical condition.

“Treatment and advanced life support interventions were immediately initiated in an effort to stabilise his vital signs. Once treated, the man was airlifted by the ER24 Oneplan Medical Helicopter to Baragwanath Provincial Hospital for further treatment.”
