Venterspost experiences water crisis

Resident of Venterspost, Esther Swart opens a tap in the hope of getting a drop of water.

Venterspost residents have endured three days without water, after a water pipe was allegedly stolen by illegal miners on Saturday, 7 April.

Residents are now complaining that they are faced with the challenge of replacing the pipe, which is taking the municipality too long to do.

“The biggest challenge we are facing now is that there are no suitable materials in Westonaria to repair or replace the pipe, and no transport to get the materials here,” said Gerhard Kruger, councillor for the area.

“All we can do for now is to fix the pipe on a temporary basis, but the problem will continue to recur.

“This is a major concern for us because the community is suffering due to the fact that the municipality does not have the necessary materials in stock,” he said.

Kruger said this clearly shows that there are challenges at management level.

Members of the community said when there is a water outage, a water truck is normally deployed, but it was difficult to know if a water truck was actually sent last night because it was raining heavily. “I do not know for sure if it was really here,” said Esther Swart, who resides in the affected area.
