The streets of Randfontein were filled with pets and their owners as they walked for a good cause on Sunday, 8 October. The event was the long-awaited SPCA Annual Dog Walk.

Forty-five small, medium and large-breed dogs participated with their human parents.

Melissa Herrmann and her dog enjoyed the walk.

Community members were allowed to take a dog from the SPCA kennels to participate in the fun. Local ward councillors, Sina Erasmus and Craig Harrison also supported the event by walking their dogs.

We have done the walk for the past ten years,” said Sina.

Lucy Phillips, SPCA chairperson, told the Herald that it was a lovely day and all the dogs were well behaved. The weather played along and it only started raining after the walk. She said it was the ideal weather for a dog walk – neither too warm nor too cold.

Each participant, with his or her furry friend(s) started the walk at the SPCA Centre. They walked through Randfontein and back, covering a 5km route.

Traffic officers ensured the safety of the participants and that everyone obeyed the rules of the road. There were resting stations along the route that provided water for the dogs, a pool and a bath. After the event, each dog received a certificate for participating in the SPCA Annual Dog Walk. The winners of the raffle were announced after the walk.

“Every participant received a prize and a printed calendar from the SPCA as a gift,” said Lucy.

Nicolene Janse van Vuuren told the Herald that it was the first time she decided to spoil her dogs with the walk and that she would definitely do it again. She recommends it to all dog owners. The event was a big success and tails were wagging all the way. The SPCA thanks the community for their support and for ensuring the success of the event. The organisation also thanks everybody who helped them before and during the event, as well as the sponsors that made the day extra special.
