Traffic fines worth R26 500 issued at roadblock

Since October is transport month, the Randfontein Traffic Department got together with the Gauteng Provincial traffic officers and held a massive roadblock at the intersection of Main Reef and Retief Roads on Wednesday, 4 October.

The Traffic Department believes that accidents are often the result of unroadworthy vehicles.

“People should follow the rules of the road and that is why we are targeting everybody using public roads,” said Solly Mogapi, Assistant Superintendent of the Randfontein Traffic Police.

The Department wants to ensure safety in Rand West City and will show no mercy to motorists who break the law. They believe that the roadblock was highly successful, having issued 40 fines to the value of R26 500.

The following fines were issued:

• Driving without a driver’s licence: 14

• Expired or no licence disc: 4

• Faulty brake lights: 4

• Unroadworthy tyres: 3

• Not wearing safety belts: 8

• Faulty brakes: 1

• No number plate: 1

• Cracked/ broken wind screen: 1

• Overloading: 2

• Failure to provide a professional driving permit (PRDP): 1

• No fire extinguisher: 1

Solly Mogapi told the Herald that the roadblock was just a build-up for the festive season that is around the corner.

The Department urges motorist to obey by the rules of the road and warns them that they won’t just be visible during the month of October, but more regularly.
