Siblings assaulted and robbed in street

The Bekkersdal Police have launched a manhunt for three suspects after they robbed and assaulted a brother and sister with beer bottles and a firearm on Friday, 4 August.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident took place at about 9.40pm.

It is alleged the victims (siblings) were walking home through the Tambo Section when they were accosted by the suspects demanding money and phones from them.

“It is alleged one of the suspects produced a firearm when they started searching the victims. The armed suspect assaulted the brother with the firearm and the other two used empty beer bottles to assault the victims. They took the victims’ cellphones and money. The victims both sustained minor injuries and were later treated at a local clinic. The matter was reported to the Bekkersdal Police and case of armed robbery was opened. The suspects are still at large.

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander urged the community to refrain from walking along the street during the night as it is dark and not safe.

“These criminals hide in dark places and wait for their victims who then fall prey to their attacks,” he added.
