Burst pipe floods house

The train where the pipe burst

On Thursday, 2 March, the Randfontein flash-flood caused a drain-pipe to burst, and flooded a couple’s home in Greenhills Avenue.

Today, Karen Anderson, 68, and her husband, Andy, 84, who have lived in Randfontein for 29 years, showed the Herald the damage that was done to their home. Karen was very upset, and said, ” I have been complaining to the Rand West Local Municipality for 28 years. The drain on our property is blocked.”

Karen explained that at about 5 pm, the drain-pipe burst and storm-water flooded down their driveway, into the garage, laundry, and ultimately the dining-room and one bedroom. The water was about 75mm deep.

The storm-water even got into their two vehicles. Karen said further, “I have a big wall unit, made for me by a family member that got wet, and is now a write-off.” A small fridge was also damaged when the water actually pushed it over. A two-year-old carpet will also have to be replaced.

The couple’s furniture is also wet. Even their aloes were washed out by the flood. When the Herald arrived, the company Crime Scene Clean-up, which had voluntarily assisted the couple, was just leaving.

Karen also said she had approached Peter Dick, the Democratic Alliance ward councillor, who said he would attend to the matter. The Herald tried to contact the municipality’s maintenance division, but was unsuccessful. The spokesperson for the Rand West Local Municipality has not as yet replied to our request for comment.
