#Father’sDay: A tribute to our idols

To the dads out there – you may think the things you do go unnoticed, but the world would be a lot emptier without you. You contribute to the value of your kids and those around you. Photo: freeimages

Father’s Day is about expressing your unconditional love for an exceptional ‘father figure’.

Today, Sunday, 18 June, is a time of celebration and a reminder to say ‘thank you’to your father in a distinctive manner. To the dads out there – you may think the things you do go unnoticed, but the world would be a lot emptier without you. You contribute to the value of your kids and those around you. Thank you for being you, and for all that you do.

Wikus Olivier, debt management expert at DebtSafe said, “There are various affordable things you can do with your dad, and gifts you can buy for him. You do not have to go to financial extremes to enjoy some quality time with your dad, stepdad, grandad, great-grandfather, uncle or father-in-law”.

Here are a few options that you can keep in mind:

Affordable gifts and card ideas
• If you have been a good financial steward and saved for your Father’s Day gift, take a look at the various stores you can choose from (gifts starting at under R100)
• Homemade gifts and card concepts (especially for the young ones) are endless.

Here are ideas that you can put to creative use:
• A ‘chocolate card’ or ‘daddy figure frame’
• Handmade cards (toddlers)
• ‘Do it yourself’ gift ideas, from a watch stand to an apron

Reasonably priced outings
• Talking about reasonably priced venues, what about a ‘lekker’ braai with no venue costs involved? There is nothing better than great company around the braai and dinner table in your own home. If you aren’t the biggest meat lover, what about a picnic in grandad’s garden with your favourite, affordable snacks instead?

• If you have saved for an outing away from home and live in, or near, metro/ urban areas, choose your dad’s favourite activity and pre-book your visit beforehand, where necessary. DebtSafe suggests the following venues: the Joburg Zoo; Compu-Kart (Edenvale); Fun Fishing (South Johannesburg); Orlando Towers’ vertical adventure centre (Soweto); Franschoek motor museum; beer-tasting in Cape Town; Air Force Museum (Port Elizabeth); Durban or West Rand’s Botanical Gardens; Acrobranching (Centurion), or The Climbing Barn (Pretoria).
